About NumListen

What is NumListen?

NumListen is an iPhone app that trains one skill: hearing a spoken number and converting it into digits quickly and accurately. Each round plays a number in the practice language you chose, you type the digits into a template that matches the format, and the app tells you which slots were right.

Who is NumListen for?

It is built for learners who already know the numbers on paper but react slowly when they hear them at full speed: language students, international students handling spoken dates, times, prices, and IDs, and migrants or travellers who hear numbers in calls, shops, bookings, and appointments. It also suits anyone who mixes up pairs like 13 and 30 or reverses the order of digits in a language whose number words run in a different order.

Can I use NumListen alongside a language course?

Yes. NumListen is a focused drill for number listening, so it fits next to whatever course or classes you already follow and gives the numbers in those lessons extra listening practice.

Which devices does NumListen run on?

NumListen is an iPhone app distributed through the App Store. Everything runs on the iPhone where the app is installed, with no account to set up.

Languages and practice types

Which languages can I practise spoken numbers in?

NumListen has eight practice voice languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Japanese, and Mandarin. You choose the spoken-number language from Home, and every prompt in the session is read in that language.

Is the interface language the same as the practice voice language?

They are separate settings. The practice voice language controls which language the numbers are spoken in, while the interface language controls the menus and labels you read. You can keep the interface in your own language and practise numbers in another.

What are the seven practice types?

The home screen offers Teen vs Ty, Basic Numbers, Phone Numbers, Codes & IDs, Money & Prices, Dates & Times, and Decimals & Percentages. Each type uses its own digit-entry template, so a phone number, a price like 12.05, a date, or a percentage is typed into a layout that matches what you heard.

Which languages have a dedicated contrast card?

English has Teen vs Ty for pairs such as 13 vs 30 and 15 vs 50. French has a 70–99 card for the soixante-dix and quatre-vingt range, German has a 21–99 card for units-before-tens order, and Japanese has an Irregular Hundreds & Thousands card for readings like 300, 600, 800, 3,000, and 8,000. For Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Mandarin, the tricky patterns, such as Mandarin 万 and 亿 grouping, are weighted inside Basic Numbers.

Can I practise phone numbers or prices in Spanish, French, German, and the other languages?

Yes. Phone Numbers, Codes & IDs, Money & Prices, Dates & Times, and Decimals & Percentages are available in every practice language, and each follows that language’s conventions. English phone practice covers US, UK, Australian, and Canadian formats with USD prices, while French, German, and Italian use euro amounts, Japanese uses whole-yen amounts, and Mandarin uses RMB with 元, 角, and 分.

Using the app

Can I replay a spoken number?

Yes. Tap Replay to hear the same prompt again before you answer. A replay repeats the same reading chosen for that exercise, so you are checking your ear against the same audio.

What does Show Answer do?

Show Answer reveals the correct digits for the current prompt so you can compare them with what you heard, then move on to the next one. Revealed answers are part of the practice flow and feed into your local statistics the same way typed answers do.

Do I have to type number words, or just digits?

Only digits. The answer is always Arabic digits in the template shown, in every practice language including Japanese and Mandarin. Where a language writes decimals differently, such as the German comma, the visible template uses that convention.

Can I change the voice or the playback speed?

Yes. Playback uses Apple speech on your device, and Settings lets you pick from the installed system voices for the practice language, preview them, and adjust playback speed. You can also turn autoplay, haptics, and sound effects on or off to suit how you like to drill.

Does NumListen track my progress?

It keeps lightweight local statistics and session summaries so you can see which practice types still slow you down and pick the next one to work on. Sessions are open-ended, so you practise at your own pace and stop when you want.

Pricing, privacy, support

Is NumListen free?

Yes. The app is free to download and use, and it is supported by ads shown through Google Mobile Ads, which can include banner, app-open, and interstitial ads. Before any ad is requested on an Apple device the app runs Google’s User Messaging Platform consent flow, and where applicable the App Tracking Transparency prompt.

Can I remove the ads?

Yes. NumListen offers an ad-free option as an in-app purchase, processed through RevenueCat, and you can restore that purchase from Settings if you reinstall the app or move to a new iPhone. Practice content is the same with or without the purchase.

What data does NumListen store, and where?

Your settings, such as voice, speed, autoplay, and haptics, plus your practice statistics are stored on your device. The app uses Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics for usage and crash reporting, and Google Mobile Ads and RevenueCat for advertising and purchases, as described on the privacy page. There is no account or login, so nothing you type is tied to an identity you sign in with.

Where are my progress and settings kept?

Your statistics and settings are stored on this iPhone, with no account to sign in to. They stay there until you reset them in Settings or delete the app.

How do I reset my statistics or settings?

Open Settings inside NumListen and use Manage data to reset local statistics and settings. Deleting the app from your iPhone also removes all of its local data.

How do I send feedback or report a bug?

Use the feedback option in the app, which opens a Tally form in your browser, or email [email protected]. Include your iPhone model, iOS version, app version, the practice type you were using, and a short description of what you expected and what happened.
